Help! trying to hook up Coby 5.1 Home Theater System?

Okay so i been trying to figure this out since yesterday. I have a Coby 5.1 home home theater System w/ built in dvd player. I can only get the surround sound to work when we are watching a DVD. How do i get it to work when we are watching reg.tv… I use a HDDVR cable box HDMI cable to hook to my Insignia 42 LCD TV.

Connect optical cable or composite cable ( red & white ) from cable box to Home Theater System for audio.
